3 Tips to Keep the Weight Off

So we have  found an effective exercise program for our weight loss journey.  We started counting calories and made sure we burn more than we eat.  We kept track of our progress by monitoring our body composition.  We jotted down in our journals.  We lost weight and achieved our goals.  Next question is, how do we keep them off?

We have seen a lot of cases where people successfully lose a lot of weight in a short period of time but after a few months gain them all back…and then some.  There are a number of reasons people are not able to keep the weight off.  For instance, following unrealistic “get slim fast” diets or strenuous cardio exercises is simply unsustainable.  Also, completely giving up on healthy eating and exercise during the holidays is a recipe for sure weight gain.

if you’re looking for a “secret” solution in this article, I’m afraid you will be disappointed.  There’s no such thing as a “maintenance” phase that for many of us means that we don’t need to be careful with what we eat or to exercise regularly.  When you embark on the weight loss journey, it is a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle.  Once you have taken off all those excess fat, you still need to regularly exercise and watch what you eat.

Here are some tips to help keep the weight off (which incidentally are the same tips for taking them off!)

  1. Stay committed.  When you embark on the weight loss journey, it is a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle.  Once you have taken off all those excess fat, you still need to regularly exercise and watch what you eat.
  2. Choose a sustainable exercise program and diet.  If you choose the get thin fast programs, chances are you will not be able to sustain it.  Set realistic goals; the objective should be long-term.  Don’t deprive yourselves too much.  It helps if you do what you like most and it is even more effective if you are passionate about it (read:  I love yoga).  It will also help if you can find someone who will accompany you in this lifelong journey.
  3. Don’t forget the cheat days and rest days to avoid burning yourself out.  ‘Nuff said.
